UN RAPPORTEUR ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN TO VISIT IRAN
TEHRAN, 26 January 2005 (UNIC) – The United Nations Commission on Human Rights Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women, Ms. Yakin Erturk, will visit Iran on an official mission from 30 January to 6 February 2005.
The Special Rapporteur has been invited by the Government and will meet with government officials, women's groups, academics, non-governmental organizations, individuals, and the press.
Ms. Erturk will meet with the officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Centre for Women's Participation, Ministry of Interior, and the judiciary, among others. The Special Rapporteur will also travel to one or two provinces during her visit. There will also be a press conference on the last day of her visit.
The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women includes transmitting urgent appeals and communications to States regarding alleged cases of violence against women, undertaking fact-finding country visits and submitting annual thematic reports to the Commission on Human Rights.
