The central library of Shahid Beheshti University, in Tehran, became the fourth United Nations depository library in this country in 2000.

Shahid Beheshti University, founded in 1960 is one of the largest academic institutions in the country, with about 14,000 students and an academic staff of over 450.

Its United Nations deposit consists of printed publications in English as well as Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the pacific (ESCAP) masthead documents.

In the early months of 2002, the collection was moved to the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights, Peace and Democracy, established on the campus of Shahid Beheshti University in 2001 with the aim of promoting human rights, peace and democracy through formal and non-formal education.

The UNESCO Chair, being an inter-disciplinary research center, brings together a library, a computer site with day-round access to the internet, and audio visual equipment, alongside the UN depositary to promote a culture of human rights, peace and democracy.
