UN Resident Coordinator to deliver speech on Iran’s environmental challenges at Royal Geographical Society, London– 17 January 2014

The second phase of the Conservation of Iranian Wetlands Project aims to roll out the results and achievements the first phase throughout the country

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Gary Lewis will deliver a speech entitled “Challenges to and from the Environment in Iran” on 18 January at the Royal Geographical Society in London, United Kingdom.

The event – “Iran’s Natural Heritage: A catalyst Symposium to Spark Measurable Change” – is being organized by Iran Heritage Foundation in association with Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, the Soudavar Memorial Foundation, the London Middle East Institute (LMEI), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and the publishers I.B. Tauris.

Iran’s environmental concerns – including but not limited to Lake Uromiyeh, the Hamouns, water scarcity, air pollution – have all been at the top of the agenda for President Rouhani’s administration. The UN is rapidly deepening its partnership with the Government to address these challenges.

The UN agencies present in I.R. of Iran are assisting the Government in a number of environmental projects including Conservation Of Iranian Wetlands Project – Phase II (Scale-up), Carbon Sequestration Project (CSP) – Phase II, Conservation of Asiatic cheetah (CACP) – Phase II, Conservation of Biodiversity in Central Zagros Landscapes among others.
