UN Iran honours lives lost on 17 January attack in Afghanistan

On 17 January an attack on a civilian location killed at least 14 people including four UN personnel.

The United Nations (UN) team in the Islamic Republic of Iran gathered together today to honour the four UN colleagues who lost their lives in a senseless attack in Afghanistan.

On 17 January an attack on a civilian location killed at least 14 people and injured many more, including Afghans and foreign nationals. Four UN personnel, along with several from other international organizations were confirmed dead.

Basra Hassan (UNICEF), Nasrin Jamal (UNICEF), Khanjar Wabel Abdallah (IMF) and Vadim Nazarov (UNAMA) dedicated their lives to work for bringing peace, stability and development to Afghanistan.

The UN flag outside the UN Common Premises in Tehran was lowered to half-mast to mourn the passing of the innocent victims of the bombing. The UN Resident Coordinator along with Representatives from UN agencies present in Iran and staff members held a brief memorial service to remember and pay tribute to the victims.

The UN team in Iran sends their deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives and hoped for a speedy recovery of the injured.
