| TEHRAN, 8 June 2017 (UNIC) – Secretary-General António Guterres and the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday separately offered their condolences to the Iranian Government and families of the people killed in the attacks in the country’s capital, Tehran.
In a statement issued at UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, his spokesperson said that “the Secretary-General strongly condemns the terrorist attacks.” At least 50 people were killed or injured in the attacks on the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the Parliament (Majlis) building. Mr. Guterres called for those responsible for “this unjustifiable violence” to be brought to justice. “All countries must work together in fighting terrorism while upholding the universal rights and values that bind the global community,” the spokesperson said. In a separate statement, the UN Security Council, which called the attacks “barbaric” and “cowardly,” stressed the need to take measures to prevent and suppress the financing of terrorism, terrorist organizations and individual terrorists.
