July 2017- Post-graduate Students of International Law Navigate the UN Online

The UN Information Centre (UNIC) held “Finding UN Information and Documentation” workshop for some 10 Ph.D. students of international law from Islamic Azad University Central Tehran Branch at the UN office in Tehran on 21 July 2017. The workshop was conducted by the UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami-Farahani. Students learned about some basic facts about the UN, and how to find and retrieve UN information on the UN websites as well as Dag Hammarskjold Library (DHL) page on the web. They also learned the UN document symbols. Overview and searching through some of DHL resources and databases including UNBISNET, Official Document System (ODS), were among the programme of the workshop.

There was a focus on International Court of Justice (ICJ), Treaty Collection and UN Audiovisual Library of International Law. The participants learnt how to locate a multilateral treaty and its status, as well as the procedural history of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights including the verbatim records of the General Assembly meetings held on 16 December 1966 when the two Covenants were adopted by consensus, without any abstentions. English and Persian copies of UN Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN System Chart were distributed among the participants. A video on ICJ with Persian subtitles was screened for the group. Ms. Fatemeh Babakhani who was the organizer of the programme found the workshop very useful and hoped that the group can participate in more UNIC activities. Workshops “Finding UN Information and Documentation” are regularly organized by the UNIC for all interested groups.
