Commemoration of 70th anniversary of ILC

TERHAN – Iranian Association of UN Studies (IAUNS) in partnership with UNIC Tehran commemorated the 70^th Anniversary of establishment of UN International Law Commission (ILC) at the House of Humanities Intellectuals (HHI) in the presence of a large number of international law professors and students on 19 November 2018.

The seminar began by remarks of the IAUNS President Dr. Nasrin Mosaffa who elaborated on ILC. 

Then the video message of UNIC Director Dr. Maria Dotsenko was screened for the audience. She thanked the continued cooperation between IAUNS and UNIC in particular Dr. Mosaffa as well as professors and members of IAUNS.

She said, during the lifetime of ILC, there have been two Iranian jurists who served as the members of this Commission. First, Dr. Ahmad Matin-Daftary from 1957-1961 and Prof. Djamshid Momtaz who became a member in 2000 and the president of the Commission in 2005.

“This distinguished professor of the University of Tehran is currently the judge ad hoc of the International Court of Justice in two cases related to Iran, namely “alleged violations of the 1955 Treaty of Amity, Economic Relations, and Consular Rights” and the case concerning “Certain Iranian Assets”, she added.

Then professor of international law Dr. Mohammad Reza Ziaeebigdeli from Allameh Tabatabaee University delivered a detailed speech on services of the late Dr. Ahmad Matin Daftari. 

Then International Law professor of University of Tehran and former President of ILC Dr. Jamshid Momtaz briefed the audience on ILC. He said the ILC members are being elected by the UN General Assembly. He added that initially the members were 15 but today they are 34. The renowned Iranian international jurist pointed out that ILC must submit its reports to the General Assembly.
