Tehran,10 December 2018 (UN-Habitat) – The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), in cooperation with the Housing and Construction Department of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development and the Road, Housing and Urban Development Research Center, hosted the third National Urban Policy (NUP) workshop, and lunched the final report of the Diagnosis Report on 10 December 2018 at the Road, Housing and Urban Development Research Center. Experts from the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, representatives from the UN-Habitat office in Iran, representatives from the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development and UN-Habitat Consultant for preparing the National Urban Policy Diagnosis Report gave a presentation at the opening of the workshop. Mr. Ali Gaedi, Directorate of Housing and Construction representative, opened the meeting and welcomed the participants. He introduced the project and the purposes of conducting the workshop. Then Mr. Siamak Moghaddam, Chief of UN-Habitat Tehran Office, briefed on the UN-Habitat global project on national urban policy and introduced the Experts from UN-Habitat’s headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Remy Sietchiping, Head of the Regional and Metropolitan Planning Unit, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya appreciated the efforts of UN-Habitat Tehran Office and further introduced the National Urban Policy. He elaborated on the process, phases, principals and the journey of NUP. He emphasized that UN-Habitat attempts to make sure that the NUP will consider everyone’s participation, demonstration and capacity building. He added that the two important frameworks including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the National Urban Policy must be localized and aligned to the context. In the follow up workshop, Dr. Sarah Habibi, UN-Habitat Tehran Office urban and regional planner, explained the framework for national urban policy and provided a summary of the National Urban Policy Project in Iran as one of three global pilot projects. The Diagnosis Report was presented by Dr. Gity Etemad, UN-Habitat consultant. Later, the participants gave their comments and suggestions. This meeting was attended by representatives from UN-Habitat partners such as the Directorate of Housing and Construction, New Towns Development Company, Road, Housing and Development Research Center, Communication and International Affairs Center Tehran Municipality, Ministry of Energy, National Land and Housing Organization of Iran, Department of Environment, Urban Regeneration Company of Iran, Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs, Secretariat of the Metropolitan Cities, Tehran Disaster Mitigation and Management Organization, Natural Disaster Research Centre, Iranian Society of Consulting Engineers, Water and Sewerage Department of Tehran Province, Islamic Revolution Housing Foundation, Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Welfare, Statistical Center of Iran, National Charity Network, University Researchers and Professors. The mission of experts from UN-Habitat’s headquarters will be followed by a field visit from the Parand New Town and a Scientific-expert meeting on “The National Urban Policy and Smart Cities” at University of Art.
