Ban Urged Tourism Establishments To Cut Consumption, Improve Waste Management

TEHRAN, 26 September 2013 (UNIC)—UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message on World Tourism Day, 27 September 2013 urged tourism establishments to cut consumption and improve waste management.

He said with unsustainable consumption and climate change threatening global water resources, this year’s World Tourism Day highlights the responsibility of the tourism industry to safeguard and intelligently manage water.  I

Ban called on individuals to play their part by making environmentally conscious choices when they travel.  He added that by making water saving a priority we can all help to build the future we want.

World Tourism Day (WTD) is commemorated each year on 27 September. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and to highlight the contribution the tourism industry can make in reaching these goals.
