Human Rights Day Ceremony in Shiraz | ||

UNIC NIO Moghadam read SG’s message and delivered a lecture in Human Rights Council for some 600 youth during a ceremony marking the Human Rights Day 2007 organized by an NGO named Jamiayete Javanan Shaysteh Iran (Society of Merited Iranian Youth) at Mehr Garden in Shiraz, capital of the Fars Province on 10 December 2007. |

Human Rights Day Ceremony in Iranian Islamic Human Rights Commission |

On 10 December, UNIC Director Mr. Sunil Narula read the Secretary-General’s message on the occasion of the Human Rights Day, which also marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, at a meeting organized by the Iranian Islamic Human Rights Commission. Some 60 people, including officioals from the judiciary, university professors and representatives of NGOs participated in the ceremony. The main speaker on the day, Dr. Esfandiar Omidbakhsh, spoke about “Human rights and its impact on the economic situation of the people”. His speech was followed by a discussion. |
Book exhibition in Sabzevar | ||

On the occasion of International Day of Disabled Person, UNIC provided copies of DPI publications such as Basic Facts about the UN , 60 Ways the UN Makes a Difference, UN Charter, UNDHR, , International Day of Peace poster, MDG’s Iranian poster, MDG’s brochure and flyer for display and some such as MDG’s flyer for distribution at an exhibition organized by an NGO called “The Society of Disabled Persons of Sabzevar” at Aftab Cultural Centre from 3 to 8 December 2007. |

Workshop on the United Nations Documents and Publications | ||||
|
To mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Human Rights Day (10 December), the Centre for Human Rights Studies affiliated to University of Tehran in cooperation with UNIC-Tehran held the second workshop on the subject of ‘United Nations Documents and Publications and Research Options on the UN Website’ on 1 December. Fourteen graduate students studying human rights in the Faculty of Law and Political Science of the University of Tehran participated in the workshop, which was conducted by the UNIC Reference Assistant, Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami-Farahani. The Director of the Centre for Human Rights, Dr. Seyed Ali Sadat Akhavi, opened the workshop. During the workshop, Ms. Ghaemmaghami-Farahani elaborated on the definition of a document, UN documentation and how to find and retrieve UN information specifically on human rights on the UN web site, the UNIC web site, the United Nations bibliographic Information System (UNBISNET) and the Official Documents of the United Nations (ODS). She also told the participants about information materials on human rights in the UNIC library. In the afternoon session, the students were asked to use the information she had provided to locate information on the web sites that she had introduced to them. The workshop was part of the UNDP supported project on national capacity building for the promotion of human rights. |

UNIC-NIO Moghadam delivered a lecture for pupils of Primary School of Tehran University on the history of UN and the activities of its main arm for supporting children namely UNICEF 22 Nov 07. Meanwhile UNIC displayed number of UN publications at an exhibition at Tehran U. Primary School from 5 to 22 November 2007. |

Iranian Association of UN Studies which is comprised of professors and students of international law, political science and international relations of several universities in Tehran in cooperation with UNIC organized an event to mark the UN Day at Tehran University on 28 October 2007. UNIC Director delivered SG’s speech followed by a speech by UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Knut Ostby on MDGs. Then Dr. Reza Ziaei Bigdeli, Dr. Kazem Sajadpour and Dr. Jamshid Momtaz delivered their lectures. DPI films: ”Year in Review 2006” and ‘Workshop of Peace” were displayed for the participants. |

UNIC and RC Office organized a major conference jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) to mark UN Day at IPIS on 24 October 2007. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affair for Legal and International Affair Abbas Araghchi, opened the seminar with his sppech. Then UN Resident Coordinator Knut Ostby, Head of Centre for Graduate International Studies of Tehran University Professor Nasrin Mossafa and WHO Representative and Head of MDG’s Theme Group Dr. Mubasher Riaz Sheikh delivered their speeches. |

MDG’s Poster Exhibition and Conference | |||||
|
On the concluding day of UNCG-Iran’s MDG’s Poster Exhibition in Qazvin (7-27 September), UNIC-Tehran helped organize a lecture by the Resident Coordinator Mr. Knut Ostby on MDGs globally and in Iran at the Qazvin Governor General’s Building on 27 August 2007. Mr. Ostby spoke to more than 200 people. Before Mr. Ostby, the Governor-General of Qazvin province Mr. Nasri delivered a speech on MDG’s progress in the Qazvin Province. Then both Mr. Ostby and Mr. Nasri answered the questions from the audience, which included government officials, NGOs from Qazvin, school and university teachers and media. |

Programme of Student Visits to UNIC-Tehran Continues | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Effective 25 October 2004, as part of the UN Day celebrations on 24 October, UNIC-Tehran and UN Association of Iran started a programme of receiving groups of students from middle and high schools in Tehran regularly every Monday. The UNIC Director, the National Information Officer and the Reference Assistant brief them on the UN history and structure and description of the major organs and agencies of the UN. This is followed by a film on the UN and a question and answer session. In addition to the Farsi version of UN publications such as the Millennium Development Goals, Image and Reality and Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are given to the students. Other schools interested in participating in this programme are welcome to contact UNIC-Tehran. |

Charity Concert “Songs from a Persian Garden” |
|
UNIC helped set up the UN system’s information desk on the sidelines of a charity concert “Songs from a Persian Garden” held in the Italian Residence on 22 May 2007. The charity concert was jointly organized by the Italian and Norwegian embassies and the UN system in Iran. The income from the event will go for the benefit of the project ‘Community Based Rehabilitation for disabled Children in Zahedan’, implemented by UNHCR in collaboration with the Welfare Organization. The information desk had general information about the UN including the UN charter, UNDHR, Basic Facts about the UN, etc. Information materials of all UN agencies stationed in Tehran, were also displayed and distributed among the invitees. |

Fourth International Conference on Human Rights at Mofid University in Qom | ||||
|
UNIC set up an information desk at Mofid University in Qom on the occasion of the Fourth International Conference on Human Rights on 16-17 May 2007. Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami managed the desk at the conference which displayed information materials from the UN and UN agencies. The conference was part of the UNDP supported project on national capacity building for the promotion and protection of human rights for greater access to justice. |

Diplomatic Ladies Group Charity Bazaar |

UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Ghaemamghami helped spouses of UN representatives in Iran to organize a stand introducing the UN system at the Diplomatic Ladies Group (DLG) Charity Bazaar at the residence of the ambassador of Turkey on 11 May 2007. UN information materials in English and Persian, pamphlets, flyers, CDs and posters of DPI, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, CEP, UNAIDS, UNHCR, UNESCO, FAO, UNIDO, WHO, UNODC and UNFPA were distributed to the large number of visitors. |
The 20th Tehran International Book Fair | ||||||

As the lead agency of the United Nations Communications Group–Iran, UNIC-Tehran organized a booth during the 20th Tehran International Book Fair held from 2 to 12 May 2007. A large number of people visited the UN booth where UN information materials, reports and posters were displayed and distributed to those who came to the booth. The agencies represented in the UN booth were UNIC, FAO, UNESCO, UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIDO, UNAIDS, WFP, UNODC, UNDP, and IOM. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the fair on 1st May. The Parliament (Majlis) speaker Dr. Gholam Ali Hadad Adel, attended the closing session. According to the Government about 3.5 million people visited the fair. |

To mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 4 April 2007, UNIC-Tehran organized a press conference at UN Common Premises. The head of the Iranian Government’s Iran Mine Action Center Mr. Morteza Habibi, the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Knut Ostby, head of the Mine Clearing Collaboration Campaign (NGO) and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Shirin Ebadi, head of Rescue and Assistance Department of Iran’s Red Crescent Society Mr. Manour Aghanasir, UNHCR’s Chief of Mission in Iran Mr. Sten Bronee and Iranian Mine Victim Rescue Centre’s (NGO) Mr. Hossein Vaziri, participated in it.
