UNIC activities during 2009
        UNIC Tehran holds workshop on finding UN information

On 23 December 2009, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Tehran, together with the Centre for Graduate International Studies at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, University of Tehran, organized a workshop entitled "Finding UN Information" for 15 graduate students of the Faculty of Law and Political Science. The workshop was conducted by the UNIC Reference Assistant, Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami. She elaborated on the definition of a document, UN documentation and how to find and retrieve UN information on the UN web site, the UNIC web site, the United Nations Bibliographic Information System (UNBISNET), the Official Documents of the United Nations (ODS) and other helpful sections available on the Dag Hammarskjold Library page on the web.


        Briefing session for members of Children's Book Council

On 24 November 2009, UNIC Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami briefed a group of researchers, writers and translators of the Childrens Book Council about the UN and Millennium Development Goals in the presence of Executive Secretary of Encyclopedia of Children and Young Adults, Ms. Tooran Mirhadi and Secretary-General of the Childrens Book Council, Ms. Nooshafarin Ansari. She also provided for the library of the Council with copies of UN and MDGs publications.


        Briefing session for Mofid U. students

UNIC Director Sunil Narula briefed some 14 graduate students from Mofid University in Qom along with their Professor Nasrin Mossafa on Human Rights Council, Universal Periodic Review and later answered their questions on 17 November 2009.


        Lecture on Unite to End Violence against Women

UNIC NIO Mohammad Moghadam delivered a speech focusing on SG's campaign "Unite to End Violence against Women and Girls" and ILO Campaign on Gender Equality, in a conference entitled "Work, Gender and Justice" organized by UNESCOs Chair and Centre of Human Rights, Peace and Democracy of Shahid Beheshti University on 9 November 2009. UNIC also had a book desk displaying various UN publications on gender and human rights.


        Briefing session for university students

UNIC Director Sunil Narula briefed some 37 law students from Imam Sadeq University in Tehran on UN4U themes as well as MDGs and answered their questions on 2 November. Later on Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmghami briefed the students on the UNIC library and its services for the students. Copies of Basic Facts about the UN, MDGs flyer and brochure, UN in Iran, MDGs poster and UN poster, UN Charter, UDHR and My priorities as a SG flyer were given to the students.


        Briefing session for Indian school

UNIC Director Sunil Narula visited the Indian School in Tehran and briefed some 50 students on UN4U themes and answered their questions on 26 October.


        UN Day press conference

On the occasion of UN Day 2009, UNIC organized a joint press conference for heads of UN agencies stationed in Tehran on 25 October focusing on UN's work in Iran and important global issues. Major newspapers and news agencies as well as the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) covered the press conference.


        Stand up- Take Action End Poverty

The Society of Merited Youth of Iran, in accordance with their cooperation with UNIC-Tehran, held an event on the occasion of the International Day of Eradication of Poverty, 17 October in the central bureau of their association in Shiraz with the presence of 700 of their active student groups. Mr. Mehdi Rezaei, the Secretary-General of the Society, made a speech on poverty and MDGs. Then he read the 2009 pledge on Stand up Take Action End Poverty. All the participants stood up and requested to end poverty and inequality.


        World Habitat Day ceremony

UNIC NIO Moghadam delivered SG's message on World Habitat Day during a ceremony organized by the Tehran Municipality at Khavaran Cultural Centre on 4 October 2009.


        International Day of Peace painting competition for Afghan children

On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, UNAMA with the support of UNIC organized a painting competition for some 200 Afghan children in Khavaran Cultural Centre in southern Tehran on 23 September 2009 . Also an exhibition of Afghan painting and calligraphy works as well as posters on peace was held for 10 days from 23 September 1 October 2009 in Gallery No. 1 of the Centre. UNIC OIC Moghadam delivered SG's message during the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition. Also, the Centre issued a press release in Persian on the painting competition and the exhibition. Copies of UDHR, UN Charter, Basic Facts about the UN and A stronger UN for a Better World: My priorities as UN SG flyer were given to the visitors.


        Ministry of economy and UNIC Tehran launch World Investment Report 2009

In cooperation with UNIC- Tehran, Deputy Minister of Economic Affair and Finance and Director General of Organization for Investment, Economic and Technical Assistance of Iran Dr. Behourz Alishiri launched UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2009 at the Ministry of Economys premises during a press conference on 17 September 2009.


        MDGs workshop for teachers

UNIC-Tehran in cooperation with UN Association of Iran organized the 3rd Workshop on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for Teachers at the UN conference room on 19 August 2009. Some 40 teachers from Tehran participated in the one-day workshop. Senior programme officers from FAO, UNDP,UNICEF, UNAIDS, WHO and UNFPA elaborated on the significance of the eight MDGs at the national and international levels and answered questions from the participants. Promotional items in Persian such the MDGs flyer, MDGs brochure, MDGs Global Report 2008 and the MDGs poster as well as UDHR, UN Charter and Basic Facts about the UN were given to the teachers.

The briefing was about UN's history and major organs, the outcome and follow up of the World Summit, UN Reform and MDGs. Then UNIC NIO Moghadam briefed them on UNIC-Tehran's activities and services. At the end of the session UNIC librarian, Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami introduced the services and UN human rights document/publications in the library available to researchers.


        UN Orientation Course

UNIC in cooperation with UN Association of Iran organized a four-day UN Orientation Course for some 55 students from Azad University in Tehran beginning on 13 May 2009. Senior programme officers from 16 UN agencies and IOM briefed the participants on their respective agencies activities in Iran and around the world and also answered questions. UNIC NIO Moghadam opened the course with his brief remarks on history of UN in Iran and the major areas of UN agencies activities in this country.


        World Environment Day

UN Resident Coordinator a.i. and UNIC Director Sunil Narula delivered SG's message on World Environment Day 5 June 2009 in the 3rd National Conference on World Environment Day held by Graduate Faculty of Environment, University of Tehran and Institute of Energy and Environment, University of Tehran on 8 June 2009 in Allameh Amini Hall at University of Tehran. Many experts delivered speeches during this 2 day conference.


        Briefing session for Azad U. students at UNIC-Tehran

UNIC NIO Moghadam briefed some 22 graduate students of international relations from Azad University in Zanjan, capital of the Zanjan Province along with their Professor Dr. Majid Bozorgmehri who visited UNIC-Tehran on UNIC-Tehran’s services and activities on 27 May 2009. Then he elaborated on the 60th anniversary of UDHR which was followed by a question and answer session. UNIC Reference Assistant elaborated on UNIC library services as well as UN documents/publications and how the students can use them. Copies of the Persian versions UN in Iran, MDGs flyer and brochure, UDHR, UN Charter, 60 Ways the UN Makes a Difference, Basic Facts about the UN and UN in Iran as well as “The Right To Think’ poster were given to them.

        International Day of Families

Nine NGOs and other organizations held a ceremony to mark the International Day of Families on 14 May 2009. Some 150 people from civil society and government participated in the programme. Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami, UNIC librarian read the Secretary-General’s message, followed by Professor Ahmad Mohit who elaborated on the subject of a stable family and psychological health. This was then followed by a round table discussion on the role of fathers in the family.

        The 22nd Tehran International Book Fair

As the lead agency of the United Nations Communications Group–Iran, UNIC-Tehran with the assistance of UN agencies stationed in Tehran, organized a booth during the 22nd Tehran International Book Fair held from 6 to 16 May 2009. A large number of people visited the UN booth where UN information materials, including books, reports, pamphlets, flyers, CDs and posters were displayed and distributed to those who came to the booth. According to the authorities this year about 5.5 million people visited the fair. The agencies represented in the UN booth were UNIC, FAO, UNESCO, UNHCR, WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNIDO, UNAIDS, UNOCHA, WFP, UNODC, UNDP, UNAMA and IOM. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the fair on 5th May. The Parliament (Majlis) speaker Dr. Ali Larijani, attended the closing session.

        International Conference on Human Rights at Mofid University in Qom

UNIC set up an information desk at Mofid University in Qom on the occasion of the Fifth International Conference on Human Rights on 13-14 May 2009. Reference Assistant Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami managed the desk at the conference which displayed information materials from the UN and the UN agencies. The conference was part of the UNDP supported project on national capacity building for the promotion and protection of human rights for greater access to justice.

        World Press Freedom Day

UNIC Director Sunil Narula delivered SG’s message on World Press Freedom Day 2009 for some 20 Iranian media experts during a ceremony organized by UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office and the UNESCO National Commission in Iran at the Commission’s premises on 4 May 2009.

        1st International Humanitarian Film Festival

Resident Coordinator a.i. and UNIC Director, Sunil Narula, delivered a speech on humanitarian issues at the opening ceremony of the 1st International Humanitarian Film Festival and the First Pictorial Arts Festive on Humanitarian Assistance, organized by UNOCHA, governmental and civil society partners on 27 April 2009 in Tehran. He congratulated the personalities from the cinema and the art world who had agreed to give their time to raise awareness of humanitarian issues in Iran. He pointed out that all over the world the UN System has been working with eminent persons from the world of films, sports, music, literature, dance and other fields to focus public attention on issues, such as poverty and hunger, refugee rights, children’s rights, women’s rights, health and education, and so on.

        Briefing for Students

UNIC Director Sunil Narula briefed some 45 graduate students from Imam Khomeioni International University in Gazvin and Tehran University who visited UNIC-Tehran on 23 February 2009. The briefing was about UN Reform followed by a Q and A session.

 

        UNIC Tehran holds workshop about the UN and how to find UN information

On 9 February 2009, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Tehran, together with the Centre for Graduate International Studies at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, University of Tehran, organized a workshop entitled "Basic facts about the UN and finding UN Information". Some 13 librarians working in libraries of different faculties and research institutes of the University of Tehran including the Faculty of Law and Political Science, Faculty of Technical Science, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Environment, Institute of Geophysics, Institute of Archeology, Institute of Psychology and Institute of Toxicology participated in the workshop which was conducted by the UNIC Reference Assistant, Ms. Nazanin Ghaemmaghami. She elaborated briefly on the history of the UN, structure of the organization, DPI, UNICs, network of UN depository libraries, definition of a document, UN documentation and how to find and retrieve UN information on the UN web site with emphasis on the site of Dag Hammarskjold library.


        Briefing for Students

UNIC NIO Mohammad Moghadam briefed some 18 students from the News College of Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The students visited UNIC-Tehran on 1 January 2009. The briefing was followed by a question and answer session.

        Programme of Student Visits to UNIC-Tehran Continues

Effective 25 October 2004, as part of the UN Day celebrations on 24 October, UNIC-Tehran and UN Association of Iran started a programme of receiving groups of students from middle and high schools in Tehran regularly every Monday. The UNIC Director, the National Information Officer and the Reference Assistant brief them on the UN history and structure and description of the major organs and agencies of the UN. This is followed by a film on the UN and a question and answer session. In addition to the Persian version of UN publications such as the Millennium Development Goals, Image and Reality and Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are given to the students. Other schools interested in participating in this programme are welcome to contact UNIC-Tehran.
