UN Mission in Iran Commemorates 67th Anniversary of UN

Tehran, 24 October 2012 (UNIC) - Today, the UN System in the Islamic Republic of Iran commemorates the 67th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations.

Wednesday October 24 marks the UN Day celebrated each year on the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.

Iran was among the first 51 countries that founded the UN by signing the UN charter in 1945.

The work of the UN in Iran covers a broad spectrum of activities, from humanitarian to development. As in other countries, the development work of the UN in Iran is guided by the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). Based on UNDAF 2012-2016 which was prepared in alignment with the 5th Iranian National Development Plan and signed between the United Nations and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the two sides agreed to cooperate on five program areas in the next five years: Poverty Reduction, Health, Environmentally Sustainable Management, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management as well as Drug Prevention and Control.

Commemorating the 67th anniversary of the UN day, the UN System in Iran would like to reiterate its commitment for supporting the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards fully achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the set deadline of 2015 as well as responding to national development priorities and emerging needs of the country.

Currently there are 17 UN agencies working in the Islamic Republic of Iran including: UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNESCO, FAO, UNAIDS, UNAMA, UNAMI, UNIDO, UNIC, UNODC, UNFPA, WFP, WHO, UN-Habitat, IOM, and UNDSS.
